Fair Trade Spices: Building Equitable Supply Chains for Farmers and Cooks
Join chef and activist entrepreneur, Ethan Frisch, cofounder of Burlap & Barrel, for a discussion about spices, spice sourcing, and building new supply chains to connect smallholder spice farmers with high value markets. Supply chains for spices have unfortunately changed very little over the centuries since the colonial spice trade - until now. Using new communication technology and an approach to spice sourcing that emphasizes quality over quantity and partnership over extraction, Burlap & Barrel is reinventing an ancient industry to make it fast, fair, and delicious.
Burlap & Barrel is a Public Benefit Corporation and the only comprehensive single origin spice company in the United States, working directly with spice farms in 11 countries to source beautiful, unique spices for professional chefs and home cooks. They supply some of the country's best restaurants (Eleven Madison Park, Blue Hill, Chez Panisse) and their work has been profiled in the New York Times, Bloomberg Businessweek, Bon Appetit and Fast Company.
